Datalogic Rhino 10

Vehicle mount computer
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

On October 28, 2011, Datalogic Mobile launched the Datalogic Rhino 10, a rugged Vehicle Mount Computer designed for warehousing management in distribution centers, warehouses and manufacturing shop floors.

The goal of the new Rhino 10 product is to increase productivity via automated data collection capability during receiving, put-away, picking and shipping activities. Unlike Datalogic's earlier Rhino-NET device that used an "open book" design that combined a half-VGA display and a physical alphanumeric keyboard, the new Rhino 8 is a pure tablet/panel computer.

Measuring 10.7 x 9.2 x 2 inches and weighing a modest 5.5 pounds, the cast aluminum clad Rhino panel addresses space constraints and offers numerous mounting options, including vehicle mounts and ABCD or QWERTY external keyboards. It runs Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 on a field-proven 520MHz Marvell PXA270 processor. Its large 10.4 inch resistive 640 x 480 pixel touch screen has anti-glare coating and is bright enough (430 nits) to be used even in outdoor settings. For expansion there is a Compact Flash Type I/II slot as well as an SD Card slot. The Rhino 10 uses 10-60VDC power and has an internal backup battery for data loss prevention in case of power outages.

The Rhino 10 has good onboard connectivity with two RS232 serial ports using standard DB9 connetors, two USB host ports, and optional 10/100 Ethernet. The panel can be ordered with Bluetooth v2.0 as well as 802.11b/g WiFi (which uses the CF Card slot). Tethered and cordless barcode scanners are available.

Devices such as the Rhino 10 are tailored for deployment in warehouse management, which requires a good degree of ruggedess. Datalogic therefore sealed the Rhino 10 to IP65 standards (i.e., it's completely dustproof and can also handle low pressure water jets from all directions). An extended -22 to 140 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range is optionally available (standard is 14 to 122F). Datalogic also claims shock/vibration resistance according to MIL-STD-810F testing procedures.

Like many Datalogic products, the Rhino comes with pre-installed and pre-licensed Wavelink Avalanche mobile device management and Terminal Emulation.

In the product announcement materials, Datalogic Mobile Vice President of Product Marketing and Support Tom Burke suggested to "Think of our new Rhino 10 as a ruggedized tablet for a forklift. Its 10" full touchscreen display minimizes footprint while allowing gloved hand operation - no physical keyboard required!" That's perhaps reaching a bit as compared to consumer media tablets the Rhino 10 is a very different product, but, like the iPad, it does offer a tablet-based way of quickly and easily entering and retrieving information.
