Rugged tablets in aerial mapping

Samwell's compact and handy RUGGEDBOOK SR820 rugged tablet used in conjunction with Applanix GNSS-Aided Inertial Direct Georeferencing and advanced Flight Management System

Only a few years ago, mobile mapping barely existed. Today, global enterprise relies on it not only for navigation, scheduling and routing applications, but also for increasingly complex commercial land-based mapping, aerial and marine surveys, and complex remote sensing applications that use dynamically accurate measurements of vehicle and sensor position and orientation to capture and mine data in ways never possible before. And they often work in conjunction with rugged, lightweight tablet computers with touch screens and displays that are both sunlight viewable and capable of being dimmed for nighttime applications.

Applanix, a subsidiary of Trimble, is integrating precision GPS with advanced inertial technology to provide uninterrupted measurements of the position, roll, pitch and true heading of moving vehicles to offer a fully integrated, turnkey solutions for high-productivity in-motion surveying, direct data georeferencing, and robust mobile mapping.

Examples of such technologies are high resolution color and infrared digital orthophotos and orthomosaics; georeferencing imaging solution for emergency responders and military operations; indoor mapping solutions that can capture spatial data of indoor and other GNSS denied areas; marine vessel based mobile mapping solutions, and much more.

A particularly interesting solution is POSTrack, a GNSS-aided inertial direct georeferencing and advanced flight management system that delivers the data workflow necessary for aerial mission planning, in-flight task automation, and high accuracy flight path monitoring quickly and economically in a single, easy-to-use package.

Designed for a wealth of applications in topographic mapping, digital terrian model generation, industry volumetrics, precision imagery, forestry, bathymetry, etc., the system is also ideal for inhospitable environments and rapid response applications where ground control is not readibly available.

POSTrack consists of Applanix POS AV direct georeferencing technology, XTRACK Flight Management System (FMS) software from Track' Air, and a compact, lightweight Samwell RUGGEDBOOK SR820 tablet computer.

The Samwell RUGGEDBOOK SR820 provides netbook size and convenience in a rugged tablet form factor. Measuring just 10.1 x 6.2 x 1.5 inches and weighing under three pounds, the SR820 is smaller and lighter than full-size rugged tablets without requiring many compromises. Its 8.9-inch touch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution (1024 x 768 interpolated) is large enough to be useful.

Powered by an 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530P processor, the SR820 provides a balance between decent performance and long battery life, thanks to the very low heat dissipation of the processor all without the need of a fan. The SR820's nicely designed magnesium alloy chassis, rock-solid construction, and steel-backed rubber bumper protection combine to make a rugged, durable tablet computer able to withstand accidents and exposure to the elements in the field.
