What are hazardous locations?
Hazardous locations are classified areas that may contain gases, vapors, dust, or fibers that create a risk for fire or an explosion. Workplace safety relies on hazardous location standards to classify areas based on criteria like likeliness of explosive or flammable material to exist under normal operating conditions. These include types of explosive or flammable materials and type of job site enclosure and ventilation. These standards are categorized in classes and divisions in North America and zones in international countries. To learn more about hazardous locations read our in-depth blog here.
What is hazardous location safe equipment?
When an area is categorized as a hazardous location, the devices that enter that area must meet hazloc certifications and be intrinsically safe (no threat of creating an explosion). Before a device can be certified to enter one of these areas they are submitted for testing and evaluation. These tests include looking at a device's potential to create a spark, surface temperature, ingress protection, and durability testing. Each of these tests serves to show that a device will remain within operating parameters while in a hazardous location, is intrinsically safe, or other reactions with the surrounding elements will not occur.
