JLT Mobile MT2010

Compact and handy rugged tablet with full 1920 x 1200 pixel capacitive multi-touch display
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

On November 6, 2017, JLT Mobile Computers, a developer and manufacturer of reliable computers for demanding environments, added the fully rugged 10-inch MT2010 Windows tablet to its product portfolio. Target industries are warehousing, food and beverage, transportation, and ports, where JLT Mobile already has a strong position.

Those familiar with JLT Mobile's rugged computing product lineup know that the Sweden-based company has been concentrating on heavy-duty vehicle mount terminals (the VERSO and the JLT1214 series) for use in trucks and forklifts.

The addition of the MT2010 rugged tablet is in response to existing customer request for supplemental tablets and handhelds to manage applications related to their business. That way, customers can keep things simple by dealing with an already familiar supplier.

A light and handy tablet

Compared to JLT's vehicle mounts, the newly-added MT2010 tablet is a much lighter device (just 2.7 pounds) designed from the ground up to serve as a handy mobile tablet with a bright, sharp display and enough performance to run even advanced Windows 10 applications.

Let's take a look at the display first. It measures 10.1 inches diagonally and offers full WUXGA video. That's a 1920 x 1200 pixel 16:10 wide-format with more pixels than a big 1080p flatscreen HDTV. On a small tablet screen, that makes for 224 pixels per inch, as sharp as Apple's excellent MacBook and iMac "retina" displays. Needless to say, the MT2010 uses projected capacitive multi-touch for effortless tapping, panning, pinching and zooming. And the display is of the IPS (in-plane switching) variety that makes for perfect viewing from all angles. The wide format and high resolution make the tablet perfectly suited for Windows 10 operation.

Processing power comes from one of Intel's workhorse midrange "Bay Trail" processors, the quad-core Celeron N2930. The chip runs at a 1.83 GHz base clock speed, a maximum burst frequency of 2.16GHz, and integrated Intel graphics. The MT2010 comes with 4GB or 8GB of DDR3L/1600 RAM and 64GB to 256GB of mSATA solid state disk storage.

Nicely equipped

On the connectivity side, there's a docking connector, USB 3.0, a combination LAN or RS232 port, and optional micro-HDMI. For wireless there's dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Class 1 Bluetooth v.4.0, u-Blox Neo-6Q GPS, and optional 3G or 4G LTE mobile broadband. There are two cameras, a 2mp in the front for conferencing and a 5mp document camera in the rear. As is expected in a contemporary tablet computer, there's a full complement of sensors.

The standard Li-Polymer battery, which is hot-swappable, packs 38 watt-hours, though power users may opt for the also available extended battery with twice the capacity.

Rugged elegance

JLT describes the MT2010 tablet as "fully rugged" and it certainly looks the part with its PC + ABS polymer construction and hefty rubber bumper corner protection. This is a tool for tough jobs. Environmental specs include a 14 to 122 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range, four foot drop, and IP65 sealing rating where the "6" means the tablet is totally dustproof, and the "5" that it can also handle low pressure water jets from all directions. The spec sheet also refers to additional MIL-STD 810G testing for vibration, humidity, and other testing.

Valuable addition to JLT's lineup

As is, with the MT2010, JLT Mobile adds a light, handy 10.1-inch Windows 10 tablet with a bright, sharp capacitive multitouch display, good processor performance and onboard connectivity in a nicely designed hardened package that should have significant appeal to their customers. And like all JLT products, the MT2010 can be tailored to individual customer requirements.
