Elbit Systems ETC Mark IV

Compact, rugged vehicle computer
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The ETC Mark IV, introduced in October 2009, is the third entry into the tactical vehicle computer market by C4I Solutions of Elbit Systems of America, following the Tacter MVP with its remote 10.4" display and the Tacter-31D dismountable tablet computer. The ETC Mark IV was specifically designed to bring powerful computer capabilities within cramped vehicle conditions.

The device measures 12 x 9.5 inches and is three inches thick. It weighs about 12 pounds and features a bright and sunlight-readable 10.4-inch display with a resistive touch screen. The ETC Mark IV is configured as a tablet or panel computer, but has a full keyboard underneath the display as well as a column of programmable function keys along the left side of the display.

Technical and ruggedness specs are somewhat sparse. The ETC is running a 1.66GHz Intel dual core processor, but we're not sure which one, or whether it's a Dore Duo or Core 2 Duo. There is a 5200mAh battery, but no voltage or expected battery life. The specs indicate a -25 to 131 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range, but no other ruggedness data other than a reference that the device is waterproof. The ETC comes with either a 32 or 64GB solid state disk, there's an internal PC Card slot, and the computer runs Windows XP or Linux.

As far as interfaces go, as a machine geared primarily towards the military, the ETC Mark IV comes with both commercial and militaryt connectors. Likewise, the computer will be available with embedded military SAASM or commercial GPS, and there are two radio interfaces and options for other interfaces such as FBCB2, CAN Bus, 1553 Bus or other customized user interface requirements.

Jim English, vice president C4I Solutions, Elbit Systems of America states, "We believe the new ETC Mark IV is a refreshingly versatile and space-saving computer solution that makes sense for both new vehicle platforms and retrofit programs.

Formerly known as Tallahassee Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Tadiran Communications, and now part of Elbit Systems of America, C4I Solutions specializes in the design, development and production of military, industrial and commercial communications equipment, rugged military computers and rugged PDAs. Elbit Systems is a supplier of tactical handheld computers to the US Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy.
