Psion Teklogix 8525 G2

Rugged 1/2-VGA Windows CE-based forklift/vehicle-mount computer
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The Psion Teklogix 8525 G2 is for forklifts and other vehicle-mount applications that require an ultra-rugged computer with a large display and a large integrated keyboard. With a footprint of 11.75 x 11.5 inches and weighing 9.5 pounds, this is a fairly large device with a large display (8.8 inches diagonally) for easy viewing and operation. The 8525 can easily be mounted with a variety of standard VESA mounts, such as those available from RAM Mounts.

The device is running Windows CE 5.0 on a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 application processor. There are 128MB of RAM and 64MB of Flash. The 8.8-inch touch screen employs the half-VGA 640 x 240 pixel wide format. This is an industrial transmissive TFT display with a 220 nits CCFL backlight and antiglare coating for indoor/sunlight viewing.

The Psion Teklogix 8525 G2, which is made of high impact polycarbonate plastic, has a large integrated PC-style 68-key alpha-numeric keyboard with EL backlighting. There are ten programmable function keys, a navigation diamond, as well as a separate numeric keypad.

In terms of connectivity, the 8525 has a tethered port with RS232, serial and USB host; a standard DB9 serial plug, and a "high density" port with RS232 serial, a USB device port and two USB host ports. For wireless communication, there is 802.11b/g WiFi and integrated Bluetooth. A variety of internal and external antenna options allow for optimal performance and range.

As a vehicle-mounted device, the Psion Teklogix 8525 uses 10-90 Volt DC, but also has a backup battery and an optional internal UPS for full operation during power loss or brown-outs.

As a Windows CE 5.0 device, the 8525 G2 has access to a large library of existing software, and there are many software development tools for creating custom applications, including the Psion Teklogix Mobile Devices SDK. Optionally available software includes various terminal emulations and an HTML browser.

The 8525 is an extremely rugged machine with IP66 sealing and a wide -4 to 140 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range. A special freezer option is available with an extended temperature range down to -22F. It has also been tested for shock and vibration, humidity, and so on, and carries the requisite agency approvals.
