Unitech PA600 PE

Rugged PDA phone
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The PA600 PE is an upgraded/optimized mobile phone version of Unitech's PA600 family of rugged PDAs. It runs the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Phone Edition and uses the 624MHz version of Marvell's PXA270 processor, the fastest one available. It also has a keypad optimized for phone use, including the standard green/red answer/hang-up hardware buttons.

The purpose of the PA600 PE is to provide an advanced communication platform that combines cell phone functionality with a rugged handhed computer that's designed to operate in the harshest environmental conditions, therefore minimizing downtime and repair costs. It can be ordered with or without a laser scanner, and Unitech also offers the device with a wireless data plan through RACO Wireless, a provider of wireless data (via T-Mobile) to the M2M and telemetry industry.

The PA600 PE measures 3.35 x 5.9 x 1.4 inches and weighs just 11 ounces including a powerful battery. It comes with 128MB of RAM and 320MB of Flash ROM. Expansion is via a single SDIO slot. The backlit transflective TFT touchscreen display measures 3.5 inches diagonally and has the standard 240 x 320 resolution (full 480 x 640 pixel would have been nice). Operation is via touch, stylus, a four-way navigation pad integrated into an 20-key arrangement that includes, in addition to the answer/hang-up buttons, numeric, alpha and function keys for rapid data entry.

The Unitech PA600 PE carries an IP64 ingress protection rating, can handle 4-foot drops, and operate in a 14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit temperature range, making it suitable for operation almost anywhere.

The PA600 PE is a modern and ergonomically designed data collection PDA that also replaces a mobile phone in situations where carrying two devices makes no sense, or a standard phone would not hold up. Despite its ruggedness, the PA600 PE is still small and light enough to go anywhere.

Unitech America is a subsidiary of Taiwanese automatic data collection specialist Unitech, founded in 1979. They are also the third-largest worldwide manufacturer of rugged PDAs.
